Conserving soils for sustainable agriculture
Wad Madani irrigated fields. The capital of Al Jazirah state in eastern central
Sudan lies on the west bank of the Blue Nile. It is the centre of a cotton-
growing region and of local trade in wheat, peanuts, barley, and livestock. The
headquarters of the Agricultural Research Corporation are located here. This
national institution is in charge of research in irrigated agriculture and high-
yielding cereal varieties. It also aims at managing and conserving the country’s
soil and water resources for sustainable and productive agriculture. Image
