Improving resilience to hazards
Hellen Atir and her family used to be nomads, but
due to frequent droughts and lack of pasture, in
addition to insecurity, they decided to settle into
a sedentary lifestyle at the Naurienpuu Food-
for-Assets (FFA) site in Turkana, in northwestern
Kenya, where they tried rain-fed farming.
FFA is a Government of Kenya initiative partly
funded by ECHO, the European Commission’s
department for overseas humanitarian aid and civil
protection. Food insecure communities receive
food or cash support as an incentive as they
work on projects that improve their resilience to
common shocks/harzards
e.g.
droughts, floods.
